The Metropolitan Police Department issues the certificate for Firearm registration.  

Are there any Exceptions for possession a Firearm without a registration in DC

Yes, any any nonresident of the District participating in any lawful recreational firearm-related activity in the District, or on his way to or from such activity in another jurisdiction provided the person has proof of the activity.   It also includes Any person who temporarily possesses a firearm while participating in a firearms training and safety class conducted by a firearms instructor.

How do I transport the Firearm in the District of Columbia if passing through?

 Transportation of the firearm by vehicle

  • the firearm shall be unloaded,
  • the firearm nor any ammunition being transported shall be readily accessible or directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the transporting vehicle.
Transportation of the firearm otherwise shall be:
  • Unloaded;
  • Inside a locked container; and
  • Separate from any ammunition.

The maximum penalty for unregistered firearm is one year and/or $2500.00 fine.
