CaseFileXpress Downloader (Beta)

by the Rollins and Chan Law Firm, Washington, DC

CaseFileXpress Downloader is free software for DC Superior Court practitioners who are tired of opening each CaseFileXpress notice and saving the PDF by hand. Every weekday morning it checks your notifications and saves any new filings to a folder on your computer, one dated folder per day, with each file named by case number (for example, 2025CF3017951_Notice_of_Non.pdf). You arrive at the office with the day’s orders, oppositions, and notices already waiting.

Beta. This tool is new and still being tested. Use it at your own risk, and keep checking CaseFileXpress yourself until you are comfortable it is catching everything. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by CaseFileXpress or the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Review the CaseFileXpress terms of use on automated access before relying on it.

Your filings never leave your computer. The program signs in to CaseFileXpress under your own account and saves the PDFs to your own folder. Nothing is sent to our firm or anyone else, and your password is never stored.

What it does

  • Checks your notifications every weekday. At the time you choose, it opens your CaseFileXpress notifications and looks for anything new.
  • Saves the PDFs for you. It downloads every document attached to each new eService, eOrder, eFiling, or Discovery notice. You choose which types.
  • Names files by case number. Each file starts with the case number and document type, so filings sort by case and are easy to find.
  • Keeps a running log. A spreadsheet file, cfx_downloads.csv, in your filings folder lists every document saved: trace number, notice date, case, type, and file name.
  • Never downloads twice. It remembers every trace number it has already handled.
  • Read only. It only reads pages and clicks Done on each notification. It never deletes, files, or changes anything on CaseFileXpress.

Download

No installation required. Download, double-click, and it runs. Windows 10 or 11 only.

A note on the warnings you will see

  1. Google Drive: Because the file is larger than 25 MB, Google says it cannot scan it for viruses. Click Download anyway.
  2. Your browser: Chrome or Edge may say the file is not commonly downloaded. Open your downloads list, click the three dots next to CFXDownloader.exe, and choose Keep, then Keep anyway.
  3. Windows: The first time you open it, Windows may show a blue screen that says “Windows protected your PC.” This appears for any program that is not signed with a paid publisher certificate, which includes most free software from small firms. Click More info, then Run anyway. You only have to do this once.

Getting started

  1. Open the program. Double-click CFXDownloader.exe. A setup window opens.
  2. Choose your settings. Pick the folder where filings should be saved (Browse lets you choose any folder, including a Google Drive or Dropbox folder). Check the notice types you want: eService, eOrder, eFiling, Discovery. Uncheck eFiling if you do not want copies of your own filings. Set the time each weekday, for example 06:45.
  3. Click “1. Sign in to CaseFileXpress.” A browser window opens at CaseFileXpress. Sign in yourself as you normally do. The program notices when your dashboard appears and saves the signed-in session. Your password is never stored.
  4. Click “2. Test.” The program lists the new filings it would download, without saving anything. Check that the list matches what you see on CaseFileXpress.
  5. Decide where to start. If you only want filings from today forward, click Start fresh. It marks everything currently listed as already handled. If you want everything currently listed, click Download now instead.
  6. Click “3. Turn on daily download.” The program sets up a Windows scheduled task for the time you chose, Monday through Friday. The status line at the top of the window shows when the next run is.

Using it day to day

  • Leave your computer on, awake, and signed in to Windows at the time you picked. The program runs quietly without opening a window. If the computer is off or asleep at that time, that morning’s run is skipped; open the program and click Download now to catch up.
  • Find your filings in the folder you chose, inside a subfolder named for the date, such as 2026-09-29. Click Open filings folder in the program to go straight there.
  • Need something now? Open the program and click Download now at any time.
  • Change settings by opening the program, changing the folder, types, or time, and clicking 3. Turn on daily download again to save the new schedule.
  • Stop it by clicking Turn off daily download.

When the sign-in expires

CaseFileXpress sign-ins expire from time to time. When that happens the program downloads nothing, shows a pop-up, and leaves a file named SIGN_IN_TO_CFX_AGAIN.txt in your filings folder. Open the program and click 1. Sign in to CaseFileXpress again, then click Download now to catch up. Filings are not lost; they download on the next successful run.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing downloaded this morning. Open the program and click Open log. The last lines explain what happened. The most common causes are an expired sign-in or a computer that was off or signed out of Windows.
  • Signed out unexpectedly. Signing in to CaseFileXpress somewhere else, such as your regular browser, may end the program’s session. We are still testing this. If it happens often, sign in again through the program after using CaseFileXpress in your browser.
  • The program stopped working entirely. If CaseFileXpress changes its website, the program may need an update. Email us and we will post a new version here.

Privacy and security

The saved sign-in, settings, history, and log are kept in your Windows user folder under AppData\Local\CFXDownloader. Treat that folder like a password and do not share it. Your filings are saved only to the folder you choose.

To confirm your download is the original, the SHA-256 checksum of CFXDownloader.exe is c3db5696b775588f6c4717c8a41ec348b7cd0ebe938637f0172e484754bb7994.
