Tools for Lawyers

by the Rollins and Chan Law Firm, Washington, DC

These are free programs we built for our own criminal defense practice and share with fellow members of the bar. Each one runs on your own Windows computer. Your case files, recordings, and filings stay on your machine and are never sent to our firm or anyone else.

Getting started with any of our tools

  1. Check your computer. Every tool runs on Windows 10 or 11. None of them needs to be installed.
  2. Download. Click the tool’s Download button. The files are hosted on Google Drive. Because they are large, Google shows a page saying it cannot scan the file for viruses. Click Download anyway. If your browser then says the file is not commonly downloaded, open your downloads list, click the three dots next to the file, and choose Keep.
  3. Open it. Double-click the downloaded file. The first time, Windows may show a blue screen that says “Windows protected your PC.” This appears for any program that is not signed with a paid publisher certificate, which includes most free software from small firms. Click More info, then Run anyway. Windows remembers the file after that.
  4. Follow the tool’s Getting Started steps. Each tool’s page below walks you through first use.

Trial Exhibit Manager

What it does: Builds your exhibit list, tracks the status of every government, defense, and joint exhibit during trial, and finds any exhibit instantly by number, witness, description, or words inside the document. Opens exhibits ready for the courtroom projector and exports a clean exhibit list for the court.

How to use it: Click New Case, drag in your exhibit files or import an existing list, and mark each exhibit Government, Defense, or Joint. Search by typing in the search box. Check the Admitted box as exhibits come in. Save the case once and it saves automatically from then on.

Jail Call Transcriber

What it does: Turns recorded jail calls from GTL/ViaPath, Securus, ICSolutions, Pay Tel, and other systems into timestamped transcripts with both speakers labeled, plus a master Call Index that summarizes the whole batch.

How to use it: Drop the call recordings or a discovery folder onto the window. Select each person’s calls and click Set Inmate Name. Choose Standard or Maximum accuracy and press Start Transcription. The first run downloads the speech model once; after that it works offline.

BWC Suite

What it does: Processes body worn camera footage from Axon, WatchGuard, Motorola, and other systems. For each video it produces an audio copy, a transcript tagged with the officer or camera ID, and subtitles that play over the footage in VLC, plus a master Recording Index for the batch.

How to use it: Drop the videos or a discovery folder onto the window. Tag recordings with Set Officer / Camera ID. Choose your outputs and press Start. VLC (free at videolan.org) is recommended for watching footage with the subtitles.

CaseFileXpress Downloader (Beta)

What it does: Every weekday morning, checks your DC Superior Court CaseFileXpress notifications and saves any new filings as PDFs in a folder on your computer, one dated folder per day, each file named by case number. This tool is new and still being tested.

How to use it: Open the program, choose where to save filings, and click Sign in to CaseFileXpress to sign in yourself. Click Test to see what it would download, then click Turn on daily download. After that it runs on its own each weekday while your computer is on.
