Talking to the Police After Arrested

People often ask whether I should talk to the police when I’m arrested. That question, although I think it’s human nature to want to explain your side of the story or your position, I don’t know how many times, or how strenuous I could tell you, it’s not in your interest to talk to the police without talking to a lawyer first. So, although it may be human nature for you to explain to the cops or explain to the police exactly what happened, don’t do it. I don’t care how much in your gut you want to, do not do it until you’ve talked to an experienced lawyer, because what you say can and will be held against you.

Can I talk to the police, especially if I am innocent?
